Day 4 : Let's take a pause for a moment to explore this.....

If a child is having problems with sleep, what would you do or what would your advice be ?

I'm sure that you would immediately come up with lots of questions and ideas.

  • you'd make sure they were having enough physical exercise during the day so they were tired at night.
  • you might stop them watching the TV or playing on their computer or tablet for a few hours before bed.
  • you might get them to have a bath an hour before bed and then get them cosy in bed while you read them a bedtime story.
  • you might make sure that their bedroom is quiet enough or dark enough (or if they are scared you might get a night light).
  • You would definitely make sure they were comfortable - in winter that they are warm enough and in summer that they are not too hot - for we all know that the temperature of the room can affect our sleep.
  • you might discover that they are eating too many sweets before bed or eating too big a meal before bed and so alter this accordingly.

We all intuitively know the basics of good sleep.

We know how to help a child and yet when it comes to ourselves for some reason we think that sleep is more complicated and instead of sitting down to work out what's we need to change - so many people start searching for the magic pill or the quick fix.

So how about you ?

  • are you both mentally and physically tired when you go to bed ?
  • have you been eating too large a meal in the evening ?
  • have you been practicing a pre-bedtime relaxation routine?
  • is your mind and body relaxed and calm when you go to bed ?
  • have you been drinking too much alcohol before bed?
  • do you stop working on the computer and stop watching TV a few hours before bed?

Of course when we read even a short list like this we can realise that the answer for one person is totally different to the answer for another. However it's all about how we can help that child or how we can help ourselves work out what we need to do to develop the habit of good sleep.

It is not one size fits all.

Maybe you can work out what you need to change by reading this short course.

Maybe you can train yourself to sleep better by developing and sticking to a habit of a pre-bedtime relaxation routine?

Maybe Storytime is the answer for you ?

But maybe you need more help ? Maybe you need a 1 on 1 coaching session ?

If you do need help I encourage you to book in with a health practitioner who specialises in sleep - someone who understands the structure of sleep and won't just give you a sleeping pill.

If you want to have a 1 on 1 session with myself - please go to this page to get more information about my skype sessions. If you want to see someone is person I suggest that you google functional medicine doctors or health coaches in your area or ask around - ask for recommendations......but whatever you do get help - sort out this issue of poor sleep.

It really is possible to sleep well - it's all about knowing how.

I look forward to sharing more with you tomorrow.

With love and best wishes

Dr Caroline
